According to the Department of Energy and the EPA a Geothermal System is the most environmentally friendly way to heat and cool your home. It uses the constant temperature of the earth to heat your home in the winter and cool it in the summer. When heating a home, the system pulls heat from the earth through a series of earth loops placed outside the home and distributes it within the home through a conventional duct system. This process is reversed when cooling a home. The heat is extracted from the air in the home and redirected into the ground using the earth loops. The earth loops are pipes that are placed in the earth through a series of wells that are positioned in the ground outside the home. The liquid in the pipes tranfers the heat either to the home from the earth during the cooler months and away from the home during the warmer months.
Not only will homeowners using a geothermal system find up to a 70% reduction in energy bills, they will find that the room temperature is more constant eliminating hot and cold spots in the home. There are no loud, outdoor condensing units like those found with a conventional cooling system.
And because Geothermal units are installed indoors, they are not exposed to rain, ice, snow, extreme temperatures and debris found with conventional systems.
Also, they are constructed to be 'whisper quiet', just like a refrigerator. One of the most important benefits from the Geothermal System is it doesn't use depletable natural resources. It uses the energy from the earth and electric power to operate equating to an energy efficiency rating of 500%, which is 50% more efficient than a 5-star rated alternative.
Standard energy saving features include 2 X 6 framed exterior walls with R-19 blown cellulose insulation (R-50 is used in the attic), Pella Low-e windows and doors which promote energy efficiency. All exterior features are caulked extensively to prevent air leakage. Water recirculators are installed on the two 50 gallon water heaters providing instant hot water, reducing the amount of water used. These features, combined with the Geothermal System, exceed a 5 Star Plus Energy Rating. Click here to learn more ›
